The White
River Trail is a beautiful trail traversing the pastoral landscape
of southeastern Wisconsin. It follows about 12 miles of the old SOO
rail line from Elkhorn to Burlington, passing through the small communities
of Lyons and Springfield, and very near to Lake Geneva. On the White
River Trail you will ride through farms, woods, rolling hills, and
the scenic, glaciated landscape of Walworth county. The ride is very
level and easy for all ages, and offers a very safe and peaceful escape
from cars and other road traffic. The White River Trail is named for
the White River, which the trail crosses in several places on some
lovely, old, railroad trestles and bridges. The White River Trail
opened with great success in June of 2003 and is now complete.
The
White River Cycle Club was formed in the year 2000 to support
the development of the White River Trail. While the trail was the
result of the effort of many people and organizations, the WRCC
was instrumental in getting it done. Now that the trail is mostly
complete, the WRCC exists primarily as a social club to promote
bicycling this area. The WRCC also sponsors The Festival
of Summer Bike Ride in the summer, as well as several weekend recreational
road and trail rides in the spring, summer and fall. Our club has
raised a significant amount of money to help support the trail.
Currently we are donating 10 benches to be placed at scenic overlooks
along the tail.
The
trail is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
and Walworth County. A Wisconsin trail pass is required to ride
the trail for riders 16 years old and up. These can be purchased
on a daily ($4) or annual ($20) basis and are good for any of the
Wisconsin State Bicycle Trails in America's Dairyland. The passes
can be bought from many of our club members or many local bike shops
and businesses along the trail. For more information please click
on the email link below.
All of The White River Cycle Club rides and meeting are
open to the public. The WRCC meets the 2nd Tuesday each month..
Meeting information and times can be had by contacting wrcc@genevaonline.com
or Don Andersion 262-248-7741. Our meetings are open to all who
would like to attend and learn about our club.
Of course we are bicyclists and think of the trail as primarily
a bicycle trail. However, it should be mentioned that the trail
is a wonderful place for hiking, horse riding (from Springfield
to Lyons) and snowmobiling (in winter).
